Ruby Quoyle (she/her, b. 2003) is an Australian sculptor and performance artist from Eora/Sydney. Blending materials and aesthetics associated with her childhood with references to monstrosity from popular culture, she interrogates the impacts that growing up with social anxiety has had on the formation of her personal identity and place in community. In her performances, Quoyle transforms herself through costume into various alter egos that represent aspects of her personality that are largely obscured and disabled by anxiety. Wearing these faceless, brightly coloured, and exaggerated costumes, she becomes anonymous yet refuses to blend in. By distancing herself from her physical body and perceived character, she frees herself from the social expectations of fulfilling a social script that she scarcely understands, using performance to carve a space where she can temporarily experience life beyond the confines of her anxiety.
