@arundhati_gotz
Arundhati Götz is an emerging artist working across figurative painting, sculpture, and drawing. She lives and works on the traditional lands of the Gadigal people. Interested in the interplay of folklore and tradition, Arundhati explores how both run parallel to the present, revealed from our periphery through the process of storytelling. Language having the power to both conceal and communicate is intrinsic to Arundhati’s experience, as she arrived in Australia unable to speak English. She grew up fostering a bilingual identity while navigating cultures from Germany, Australia, and Namibia.
Inspired by the rich imagery of German poetry, Arundhati also draws from the enchanting and eerie landscapes of her place of origin, the Black Forest. Where the dark and dense pine trees blurred the edges between myth and reality allowing for the emergence of the Brothers Grimm fairytales. Arundhati employs storytelling to provide a non-linear fleeting glimpse into moments of action and pause, summoning these mystical and surreal themes into a contemporary Australian context. She is particularly drawn to the archetypal representations of women and how they offer insight into the feminine narrative. Her paintings begin as narrative maquettes where she casts her character onto a stage.
