Yuyun Ma (b. 2002) is a Chinese-born multi-disciplinary artist residing in Sydney. His practice spans a variety of media, employing video, printmaking, digital technologies, and interactive installations to provoke and engage viewers.
His work critically examines the intersections of visibility, anonymity, identity, and technological surveillance. Inspired by the 20th issue of FUKT magazine, which discusses faces as markers of identity, Ma became intrigued by the concept of the "anti-face" as a form of protest against AI facial recognition. This exploration reflects a duality in his work: disrupting AI observation while simultaneously blending into the crowd. Emphasizing the tension between visibility and obscurity, Ma’s practice prompts a reconsideration of how individuals present themselves in public spaces. The masks created serve as metaphors for this complexity, highlighting the challenges of self-representation amid constant monitoring.
Yuyun Ma aims to critically address the intersections of technology, identity, and surveillance. Their ongoing work seeks to deepen the understanding of how digital technologies shape contemporary identity and the implications for individual autonomy in an increasingly monitored society.
