Jacinta's painting practice explores central themes of femininity, memory and trauma, through the symbolic resonance of the natural world as a deep well to draw from. Jacinta is interested in the plurality of meaning that is offered by the ambiguous yet potent symbolism that emerges throughout human history and continues as a living and vital language. Working loosely with landscape and figuration, she aims to make work that is able to engage the viewer in a conversation about what is painted, what is shown, what is concealed, what is said or left unsaid. Jacinta predominantly paints in a very process based way, using acrylic in various modes, soaking, staining, dotting and scumbling onto large sheets of canvas. Jacinta uses the process of staining to refer to the accumulation of 'stains' on the unconscious over time. Her work teases out complex relationships and emotive states which remain somewhat veiled by the light staining of the surface. The paint is encouraged to bleed and an element of chance is incorporated into the composition of her work. The light and organic forms that are produced allow the work to continue to breathe and remain open. Plurality and ambiguity are important considerations in Jacinta's conception of how painting can function in the contemporary art world. Jacinta is inspired by the long and vital traditions of surrealism, poetry and symbolism which inherently encourage contemplation and reflection while giving rise to a multiplicity of interpretations and ideas.
