Marko Karanfilovski is a multi-disciplinary artist working on Gadigal land (Sydney). He works with sculpture, painting and installation processes to explore ideas of objecthood and Formlessness.
His current body of work The Hopeless Faktura is mainly composed of abject objects. These are objects that fail to represent any one thing, instead obliquely resemble many. These variegated lumps are evidence of the artist’s strange drive toward indistinction. An indistinction which acts as a mechanism for broadening one's instinctual and perceptual response to the works. These incomprehensible and unclassifiable forms activate each other through their interplay in space, developing a spatial language which explores object recognition, relations and inherently provokes resemblances.
These organic and intuitive forms are active as they are positioned in dialogue with ready-made objects to infer relations and oppositions between the hand-made, the mass-made, and waste. His works are often process-based, primarily dealing with the transformation of raw materials into intuitive and playful organic forms. The works are born from an open-ended accumulation of concrete, paper pulp, plaster, foam, and most importantly the by-products/remnants of previous works. Additionally, a concern of spatial phenomenology informs the approach of presenting these objects. The forms playfully reckon with the dynamics of meaning and communication in space. The Formlessness of said objects allows for greater focus to be on the interaction of the works, the ready-mades and the space, beckoning the viewer’s intuitive response and associative powers to read the assortment of objects presented.
