@matthew.lorrimer
After a 40-year career in applied arts, primarily theatre-making and international events, Matthew’s fine art practice is often informed by his experience in and love of theatre and performance in all its manifestations. He believes live theatre, with its ‘suspension of disbelief’, is as inspiring and essential to the human psyche as other art forms.
Matthew’s artmaking explores the use of direct and implied narrative to evoke memory, mood, movement, time passing and change. He uses a variety of media, employing multiple processes to produce abstract and figurative works, often focusing on the ‘theatrical encounter’. Through this device, he explores universal, political and societal themes, allowing his works to evoke a unique resonance for each viewer’s encounter. These live encounters in galleries, environments and studios are unpredictable, enacting on-the-spot theatre-making.
Matthew frequently allows the meaning and inherent trace of his work to reveal itself, as ideas and recollections develop, rather than setting out to explore a particular conceptual proposition. His work is largely semiotic, often materially rather than conceptually driven, and is sometimes derived from a text or a witnessed event.
Matthew’s current work explores the application of composite and multi-layered imagery in printmaking, painting and drawing. He lives and works on Cammeraygal land.
