Karim Fares grew up in a two bedroom flat in Western Sydney, raised by a single mother. His early works reflect constraints around material costs and work space - generating an affinity for small scale, found object sculptures. During his final year of high school he created a series of insects from refuse and detritus, which formed his portfolio application to the National Art School. He is currently in his third year of a Bachelor of Fine Art, where his practice reflects an expanded view of printmaking - focusing on the conceptual background of contemporary print, rather than traditional methods of production. Karim draws conceptual inspiration from the early surrealist theories of Guy Debord and Andre Breton, the anticapitalist doctrine of Charles Baudelaire, and the elaboration of The Abject laid out by Julia Kristeva. His works continue to be sculptural, incorporating his affection for found objects.
