Sevgi Yilmaz is a Turkish Australian painter who is constantly seeking to diversify her practice. With roots of inspiration in graphic art and animation, she refined her focus into portraiture through senior school and continues to utilise the power of representation within her work at the National Art School. Yilmaz is interested in the styles of Post-Impressionism and has developed a similar style that captures expression. She has spent much of her recent time extending beyond her discipline using pins and spray paint, amongst other media.
Yilmaz was raised by two first-generation Turkish immigrants who both originate from a village named Üç Kuyu. She has spent much of her recent practice investigating her cultural roots, motivating her to experiment and use her art to connect to her cultural identity. Stepping out of her comfort zone, Yilmaz plays with symbols from Turkish Rugs and ready-made objects as a way to extend beyond painting into installation work. She skillfully contrasts the aesthetics of order and chaos against each other as a response to the attitudes of tradition, delving into ideas of the transferal of culture and the mother and daughter relationship as primary themes in her contemporary practice.
