Jasper Sewell

@jaspersewell

Jasper Sewell is an Australian artist based in Eora/Sydney, whose painting practice delves into the vibrant world of nightlife. His work explores the energy, rhythm, and altered realities of this scene, fusing figurative painting with elements of realism, expressionism, and cubist fragmentation. Through these styles, he portrays dynamic movement, the pulse of music, and the visceral experience of altered consciousness, creating a visual rhythm that mirrors the beats and flows of nightlife. His work is deeply concerned with the atmosphere of these spaces, aiming to evoke the euphoria, chaos, and introspection that often coexist in nightlife. Central to Sewell's paintings is his colour palette, grounded in earthy neutrals and browns which act as a counterpoint to his vivid, saturated colours that pop out like bursts of light in darkened club spaces. This contrast heightens the emotional impact of the scenes, drawing attention to key elements within the composition and evoking the altered states of his subjects. Thematically, Sewell's work explores not only the external chaos of nightlife but also the internal worlds of his figures. His subjects, often caught mid-movement or in moments of quiet contemplation, reflect a tension between individual identity and the collective experience of a crowd.
