The enchanting realm of fairytales is the primary setting for Isabella Bendeich’s oil paintings. Theatrical still lifes are constructed wherein figures and objects take on the roles of setting, prop, costume and actor. Referencing fairytale iconography, escapism becomes a fundamental theme explored by the artist, interwoven with personal and shared experiences of anxiety, insecurity and uncertainty. Her limited and monochromatic colour palettes create a distorted sense of reality, encouraging viewers to escape to the world of fairytales, whilst also reflecting on the fears that lead people to these fantastical spaces.
