Gitte Backhausen (b. 1976) is a Danish-born Australian multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans two decades of painting, assemblage, printmaking, installation, mixed media and more recent, text-based art. In this new direction in her work, Backhausen investigates the dichotomy between societal conformity and individual expression. Through the use of computer-generated fonts as a symbol of standardisation, and asemic handwriting as a representation of personal identity and freedom, her new body of work, "Not As Expected", raises questions about norms and how to navigate our human role in contemporary society. This includes researching and reflecting on the impact of technology on individual expression and decision-making, how we navigate the landscape of norms and new opportunities, whilst balancing the need for individual expression and the human desire to both evolve and belong.
