Charlie Tiffin

Charlie Tiffin is a multidisciplinary artist based in Sydney, Australia. Their work merges video technology with airbrushed still images, creating a unique form of didactic painting. Inspired by Sydney's rave scene, Charlie draws influence from the dynamic visuals that accompany live music performances, crafting art that responds to the energy of the moment.
Using software like Adobe After Effects, Touch-Designer, and VMX, Charlie digitally manipulates footage they capture themselves or source from open-access video programs, developing their own "rave visuals" that are projected onto paintings. The paintings are created using large paper stencils, which are meticulously cut and airbrushed to achieve a matte black finish that absorbs light. This process results in crisp black-and-white images that interact with and penetrate through the projected media, creating an immersive didactic artwork.
Growing up in a digital age, Charlie is driven to blend digital and traditional media, crafting artworks that inhabit both worlds. Their practice updates and reimagines these forms, producing paintings that not only exist as static pieces but also come to life through real-time projection. Charlie integrates their artistic practice, experience, and education into the very rave scenes that inspire them, contributing their skills in visual media to Sydney’s rave collectives.
