Hannah Beale is an Australian artist whose work is rooted in the exploration of botanical life, memory, childhood, and the theme of memento mori. Drawing inspiration from the flora and fauna of her mother’s garden and the landscapes of Tumbarumba, where she grew up. Hannah’s art captures the magic and wonder of these places. She has majored in printmaking with a focus on detailed etchings with aquatint.

Hannah currently lives and works in Sydney on Gadigal Land. Her recent works, particularly her large etchings, depict the botanical beauty and trinkets of her childhood home. Influenced by 17th-century Dutch still life paintings, she reflects on the fragility of life through her compositions, often incorporating elements of decay and renewal. The concept of memento mori—a reminder of the inevitability of death—features prominently, encouraging viewers to appreciate the beauty of life in its transience.

The devastating loss of her family’s Tumbarumba property in the 2020 bushfires deepened her commitment to preserving the memory of the botanical life and the memories of her childhood that once thrived there. Through her work, Hannah seeks to immortalize these memories, using the permanence of etching to capture fleeting moments of wonder and connection.
