Theo Delaney/Lathouras is a multidisciplinary artist working with images and performance. Based in Sydney, Australia, his work is concerned with the cultural moment we inhabit and our ambivalent embodied relationship with media in the internet age. He is interested in tracing aesthetic legacies through research and practice, and how artistic methodologies across genres, mediums and contexts can contaminate and inform a conceptual art practice. Trained in traditional printmaking, his recent etchings examine the lineage of printmaking for literary illustration, remediating digital imagery to reinterpret myths and literature for the confused current moment.
Theo’s recent performance series Recitals appropriates vocal performance into an art context, where with songs, monologues, improvisation and staging, a hybrid immersive experience emerges. The work engages the materiality of the voice and the transformative power of amplification and reverberation in spaces, both organic and fabricated. Works are adapted to a space’s acoustic qualities, architectural features and social history. Recitals brings theatre, film and music into a speculative discursive space while questioning the pretentions of avantgarde performance. The artist is interested in the materiality of artifice, affect and charisma in the liminal performance space, and how the work is reshaped by its inevitable rebirth as documentation.
