As a young and emerging artist at the National Art School, Luka's current body of work, acrylic painting on paper, reflects his preoccupations over the past few years with depicting themes of existential crisis (alienation, isolation and loneliness in urban life) in a style that maybe loosely described as a mix of several Post-Impressionist movements. He creates psychologically charged images of silhouetted figures standing motionless or moving through a crowd in routine urban settings. Common to all the works is St Mary’s Cathedral an isolated spiritual realm distinct from the secular parts of city radiating a positive light source of hope and optimism from multiple viewpoints and angles following the tradition of Monet, Cezanne and Hokusai. An essential part of the process of encoding the meanings created by the cathedral’s juxtaposition with flat silhouetted figures in mundane urban settings is Orlandini’s relationship with poetry. The muted colour combinations of autumnal reds, greens and purples with frozen winter blues along with supporting extracts from selected poems evoke a quiet melancholic atmosphere and a mood of contemplation.
